BrunNet at 30: Fredericton's Dial-Up Survivor That Became an IT Department for Hire

Born in 1995 with modem banks in funeral home basements, BrunNet sold its ISP business to Bell Aliant, rebuilt from two employees, and now runs IT for organizations across Atlantic Canada.

TechImpact's CollabHub recently ran a member spotlight on BrunNet, the Fredericton managed-IT provider now closing in on its fourth decade. The spotlight framing — trusted regional partner, consultative approach — undersells one of the better survival stories in New Brunswick tech.

BrunNet has been selling connectivity and computing from Fredericton since 1995, which means it predates Google, broadband in most of the province, and nearly every company on our Companies page. It got here by shedding its original business entirely — twice.

Modem banks in funeral home basements

BrunNet started as the internet service provider division of Brunswick Micro Systems, a computer reseller, offering dial-up access and web hosting across New Brunswick. Expansion in the dial-up era meant physical presence: a modem bank in every calling area, or customers paid long distance.

BrunNet's fix, recounted in the company's own 25th-anniversary history, is a perfect artifact of 1990s New Brunswick infrastructure: it partnered with a regional funeral home operator willing to house dial-up equipment in the basements of several locations, giving far-flung customers a local dial tone. When Brunswick Micro Systems was sold in 1998, BrunNet spun out on its own.

Sell the ISP, keep the company

In 2003 BrunNet sold its ISP business to Bell Aliant — the same consolidation wave that swept most independent Atlantic ISPs — and shrank to two employees. What was left refocused as a value-added reseller: hardware, software, and support for small businesses, schools, and government agencies.

The rebuild worked. HP named BrunNet its fastest-growing reseller in Canada in 2014, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce made it Small Business of the Year in 2017, and Computer Dealer News has ranked it a Top 100 Canadian solution provider every year since 2015 — for stretches, the only Maritime-based company on the list.

The IT-department-for-hire era

The last several years brought the third act: from reseller to managed service provider. From its Bishop Drive office, a team of twenty-plus now acts as the outsourced IT department for organizations across Atlantic Canada — help desk, cybersecurity, Microsoft 365 and cloud migrations, Apple device management — backed by the TD SYNNEX PartnerLINK network's 800-plus technology vendors. Through TechImpact, it supports businesses going through the Digital Boost 3.0 digital-transformation program.

The unfashionable middle of the ecosystem

Like Dovico in Moncton, BrunNet is the kind of company ecosystem coverage skips: no venture rounds, no exits to headline, just three decades of payroll in Fredericton and customers who renew. But every startup on this site runs on somebody's managed infrastructure, and the province's dial-up-to-cloud arc — NBTel's early internet push, the ISP consolidations, the MSP turn — is visible in miniature in this one company's history.
