UNB Partners with Talent Innovation Canada to Put Grad Talent Inside Industry R&D

The University of New Brunswick is plugging graduate talent into company R&D through a new partnership with Talent Innovation Canada (TICAN), a national nonprofit that embeds researchers with firms working on advanced technology.

UNB’s newsroom announced the agreement on August 14. It pairs TICAN’s industry-matching model with UNB’s J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship (JHSC) — the home of the TME / MTME pipeline that already feeds Fredericton’s founder scene.

Industry challenges, campus talent

Under the deal, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars will match with New Brunswick companies in sectors TICAN and UNB flag as critical: mobility, biomanufacturing and life sciences, clean growth, microelectronics, and information and communications technologies.

For now, student participants must be enrolled in UNB’s Master of Technology Management and Entrepreneurship. The pitch is dual-purpose: companies get help advancing technologies with commercial potential; students get real project experience and a tighter link between research and local employers.

“This partnership creates a powerful bridge between research and industry,” said Dr. Kathy Wilson, UNB’s acting president and vice-chancellor. “By connecting graduate students and postdoctoral scholars with companies tackling real-world innovation challenges, we are helping to develop highly skilled talent, accelerate the commercialization of new technologies and strengthen New Brunswick’s innovation economy.”

TICAN CEO Arvind Gupta framed the UNB deal as part of a national push: “With TICAN, we are laying the groundwork for a national effort that unites Canada’s most research-intensive industries with exceptional graduate talent to accelerate advanced technology development.”

Fits the campus entrepreneurship map

JHSC already runs the hands-on TME / MTME programming — pitches, experiential projects, and founder training — that has produced recent local wins such as Creduman’s MTME: NEXT finish. The TICAN partnership sits beside UNB’s newer Network for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which bundles JHSC with McKenna Institute, Pond-Deshpande, and other campus entrepreneurship assets under one front door.

For New Brunswick companies, the practical question is whether TICAN’s matchmaking opens a durable path to subsidized graduate R&D capacity — something Ottawa backed nationally in May 2026 with $29 million for TICAN’s launch, as BetaKit reported.
