UNB Stitches Its Startup Machinery Into One Network

UNB’s startup machine just got an org chart.

The University of New Brunswick has launched the Network for Entrepreneurship and Innovation — a single hub meant to make it easier for founders, researchers, and external partners to find the right campus program without guessing which door to knock on. Entrevestor reported the launch on July 23, 2026. Acting President and Vice-Chancellor Kathy Wilson told partners the Network will serve as a central home for UNB’s entrepreneurial assets; Dr. Dhirendra Shukla is the inaugural executive director. Seven programs, one front door

The Network does not invent a new accelerator from scratch. It bundles seven existing pieces that already define Fredericton’s (and Saint John’s) campus pipeline:

• International Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (IBEC) — research, education, and international business development in the Faculty of Management
• J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship — the TME / MTME engine behind student launches (including this month’s Creduman win)
• Wallace McCain Institute — leadership and peer-learning programs for entrepreneurs
• Pond-Deshpande Centre — social innovation and community entrepreneurship
• Barrett Chair in Entrepreneurship for Digital Transformation — research and teaching on digital-era founding
• McKenna Institute — digital transformation research, policy, and industry collaboration
• Axis Accelerator — commercialization support for researchers and new ventures

UNB’s own Network page frames the job as connector and amplifier: students, faculty, and community innovators should be able to tap mentors, funding, and partnerships without navigating seven separate brand identities first.

Who is running it

The appointment is the most legible thing about the announcement. Shukla has held the Dr. J. Herbert Smith ACOA Chair since September 2009 — seventeen years running the single largest component of the thing now to be consolidated. TME and MTME are the campus pipeline in most people’s mental model of UNB entrepreneurship, and their chair is now the one deciding how six other units sit alongside them.

The academic background is unusual for the role: an MBA from Telfer and a PhD in entrepreneurial finance from King’s College London, with published research on venture capital, syndication, corporate governance, and boards of directors. That is a specialty in the machinery of how ventures get financed and governed, now applied to the institution deciding which UNB ventures get in front of financiers.

There is an operating company too. UNB’s newsroom described Shukla joining Gray Wolf Analytics — a TME-originated blockchain and cryptocurrency analytics startup that uses AI to flag criminal activity for financial institutions and exchanges — as co-founder and CEO, and Shukla posted the MTME: NEXT judges slate earlier this month. An executive director who is simultaneously an operator is a different proposition from a career administrator, with the obvious upside and the obvious question about divided attention.

What the number does and does not say

Entrevestor notes the university is building on an estimated $125.5 million economic impact from UNB startups and spinoffs — a figure adjacent to the $122 million+ raised across TME-supported companies we cited in our pipeline feature. Neither figure comes with a published methodology, and “economic impact” covers a lot of ground between capital raised, revenue booked, and jobs attributed.

What the Network changes is narrower than the number implies: a front door, a shared contact address, and one person accountable for whether the seven units cooperate. Whether that turns the next Fraser Fund cheque or MTME pitch into something faster than it was is a question about internal cooperation between units that kept their own brands, budgets, and reporting lines. Consolidation announcements are easy; the org chart under them is where they usually stall.
