The cheques are small. The signal isn't. UNB's Fraser Student Venture Fund — the Faculty of Management vehicle that writes some of the first investment dollars a student company ever sees — has backed a 2025 cohort that includes SpatialOne, Profitual, and AinaTest Diagnostics.

Why first cheques matter disproportionately

There is a specific, awkward moment in every student venture's life: too real for a pitch-competition prize, too raw for even the friendliest angel. Student venture funds exist for exactly that gap, and their alumni list is the argument — Picketa Systems, now selling plant-tissue analysis across the U.S., took Fraser Fund money in 2022 when its LENS device was closer to a course project than a company.

The fund is also a filter with skin in the game. Plenty of programs celebrate student ideas; far fewer put dollars behind a shortlist. Watching where that shortlist points has been a reliable preview of the province's startup pipeline.

Reading the 2025 vintage

The new cohort spans spatial technology, financial planning software, and diagnostics — none of which existed in the pipeline's earlier agtech-and-energy-heavy vintages.
