UNB Opens VR Suites to Train Nurses for Newborn Emergencies

Two Margaret Mallory Pediatric Simulation Suites, in Fredericton and Moncton, let UNB nursing students rehearse crises in newborns and babies in virtual reality. A 1968 nursing graduate and her partner made them possible.

Nursing students at the University of New Brunswick can now rehearse emergencies in newborns and babies in virtual reality.

UNB opened the Margaret Mallory Pediatric Simulation Suites at a ceremony on Oct. 19, the university said in a release. The pediatric focus is meant to prepare students for those crises before they face them on the job.

One suite in each city

  • Fredericton: Room 119, MacLaggan Hall
  • Moncton: Room 216, 55 Lutz Street

The suites were made possible by nursing alumna Margie Mallory (BN'68) and her partner, Duncan MacDonald (BBA'68).

"When Margie saw this technology in action, she immediately realized how it could be used to teach critically important skills," said Dr. Kathy Wilson, UNB's acting president and a member of the nursing faculty.

'Learn Where You Live'

Dr. Lorna Butler, dean of nursing and health sciences, ties the suites to a worldwide nursing shortage and Learn Where You Live, UNB's technology-assisted model for delivering nursing education.

"We have expanded the use of advanced simulation and extended reality education (SIM/XRed), interdisciplinary training and global partnerships to ensure nursing students are educated at the highest standard of skill development and ready to practice in the clinical setting," Butler said.

UNB says it has the only nursing program in Canada to earn the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning's Healthcare Simulation Standards Endorsement.

Wilson said the suites will help UNB reach mature and upgrading students who cannot move to campus, learners in the northern territories and students in other countries.
