Gray Wolf Analytics: Crypto Forensics from a Fredericton Classroom
Born inside UNB's TME centre in 2019, the startup applies AI to blockchain analytics so banks and exchanges can spot criminal money before it touches them.

Cryptocurrency's pseudonymity is a feature for users and a nightmare for compliance departments. Gray Wolf Analytics — born out of the University of New Brunswick's Technology Management and Entrepreneurship centre in February 2019 — sells the antidote.
What it does
Gray Wolf applies artificial intelligence to blockchain transaction analysis, helping financial institutions and cryptocurrency exchanges identify wallets and flows tied to criminal activity — fraud, laundering, sanctioned entities — before those funds contaminate their books. As regulators worldwide pull crypto into conventional anti-money-laundering regimes, the compliance tooling market has shifted from optional to mandatory, and analytics is its picks-and-shovels layer.
The Fredericton logic
A blockchain-forensics startup sounds like it belongs in New York or Singapore, but its ingredients are exactly Fredericton's pantry: machine learning talent from UNB, security-industry DNA from the Q1 Labs lineage, and an institute — the Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity — that publishes some of the most-cited security datasets in the world a short walk from the company's origins.
It's also a fresh data point for the TME thesis: the centre's startups aren't clones of one model. In the same pipeline vintage you'll find heat-pump hardware, off-road vehicle software, agtech instruments — and now financial-crime analytics.
What to watch
Compliance markets reward incumbency and trust, which makes the early enterprise logos everything. For Gray Wolf, each bank or exchange that signs is both revenue and moat — the kind of compounding, unglamorous progress this province's best companies tend to share.
