VeroSource and the App Behind MyHealthNB

Fredericton’s digital-health vendor — now a HEALWELL subsidiary — is the PHI layer inside New Brunswick’s patient records app, from labs and meds to a shareable Patient Summary.

Most New Brunswickers who open MyHealthNB never see a vendor logo. They see labs, meds, imaging reports, and immunizations. The Fredericton company that assembles much of that personal health information for the province is VeroSource Solutions — the same firm HEALWELL AI bought in 2024.

It is worth being precise about what that means, because “the company behind MyHealthNB” overstates it. VeroSource does not own the program, the clinical data, or the login. It owns the layer that assembles the record a patient sees — which is a narrower job and, for anyone thinking about where the risk sits, a more interesting one.

What MyHealthNB actually is

MyHealthNB started in April 2020 as a COVID results and vaccination channel, then grew into a broader records portal. On January 26, 2024, the Department of Health launched the mobile app for phones on recent iOS and Android builds. Eligible users (NB Medicare, 16+, with a registered account) can view laboratory results, dispensed medications, diagnostic imaging reports, and immunization records online.

The province’s own privacy statement names the stack in plain language: eHealthNB and Service New Brunswick own the program; Simeio handles registration and login; Salesforce runs the website and navigation; VeroSource maintains the components that query, assemble, store, and pass personal health information between applications for display. Clinical feeds come from the provincial EHR, Drug Information System, and Public Health systems — VeroSource’s job is the patient-facing assembly layer, not owning every upstream database.

By late 2023, GNB and VeroSource were citing roughly 230,000 New Brunswickers who had already accessed records through the portal.

Patient Summary — the shareable layer

In July 2024, shortly after the HEALWELL close, New Brunswick and VeroSource launched a Patient Summary inside the MyHealthNB mobile app — framed as the first patient-mediated patient summary in North America, aligned to the pan-Canadian PS-CA specification with Canada Health Infoway. Users can package about twelve months of meds, immunizations, labs, and imaging into a summary they choose to share with clinicians who do not sit on New Brunswick’s EHR — travel, walk-ins, emergencies.

That is the clearest public proof of what VeroSource sells into government: not a consumer wellness brand, but interoperability and patient-access software that has to survive PHIPAA, RTIPPA, and a province’s appetite for “hold your own records.”

Who steers the data practice

VeroSource CIO Gerry Fairweather (UNB BScE’94, MEng’03) is the public face of that responsibility. Before the company, he spent more than a decade on Department of Health enterprise architecture, then served as the province’s chief digital officer and CIO — including accountability for privacy legislation — per VeroSource’s bio and a 2026 UNB alumni profile. In that piece he points at MyHealthNB’s wait-time and records views as systems VeroSource helped build, and treats privacy as a design constraint for any AI layered onto health data rather than a blocker to ignore.

CEO Mark McAllister remains the commercial voice on the provincial partnership; Fairweather’s beat is the data-and-trust side that makes a consumer health app politically survivable.

What changed when the owner changed

The HEALWELL acquisition — up to $24.5 million, five provincial clients, Fredericton kept as an operating centre — did not change VeroSource's contractual role in MyHealthNB. The privacy statement still names it as the assembly layer, beside Salesforce and Simeio.

What it changed is who owns the vendor. A TSX-listed healthcare-AI company now sits behind the software that queries, assembles, and stores personal health information for a provincial patient app. HEALWELL's stated reason for buying VeroSource was that its data layer could carry population-health AI into provincial systems — which is a coherent commercial thesis and also the thing a privacy commissioner would want to ask about, because the value of an interoperability layer to an AI company is precisely the data flowing through it.

The governing constraint is that the province, not the vendor, is the custodian. eHealthNB and Service New Brunswick own the program; VeroSource operates components under contract, and what it may do with PHI is set by that contract and by RTIPPA and PHIPAA rather than by its parent's product roadmap. Fairweather's public position — privacy as a design constraint on any AI layered onto health data — is the right one to hold in that seat, having held the province's side of the same question before taking the vendor's.

None of that is an allegation; there is no public evidence of provincial health data being used for anything outside the MyHealthNB program. It is the structural question the ownership change creates, and the answer lives in contract terms that are not public.

The ordinary product questions are open too: what gets added after Patient Summary, and whether adoption has moved past the roughly 230,000 users cited in 2023 — a figure the province has not obviously updated since.
