Chinova and Smart Skin Land on CFIN's 2026 Foodtech Frontier List

The national list names 40 companies. Fredericton is on it twice: Chinova in ingredients, Smart Skin in manufacturing technology.

The Canadian Food Innovation Network put two Fredericton companies on its 2026 Foodtech Frontier list. Chinova Bioworks is named under next-generation ingredients and foods. Smart Skin Technologies is named under food manufacturing technology. CFIN announced the 40 winners on October 6 from Guelph. The list is recognition and a route to investors, partners and customers. It is not a cheque.

What the two Fredericton firms already sell

Chinova makes Chiber, a mushroom-derived chitosan preservative for food and drink brands. Our 2024 profile covers the 2016 founding, the seed round co-led by DSM Venturing and Rhapsody Venture Partners, and the Series A. Smart Skin's Quantifeel drones are replica cans and bottles wrapped in pressure sensors that ride a bottling line at production speed. The earlier Smart Skin piece covers that hardware for beverage lines. The company's site now sells the same approach to pharmaceutical lines too, with formats for vials, syringes, cartridges and ampoules. CFIN lists it as SmartSkin Technologies.

CFIN sorts them into different lanes of the same list. Chinova sits with 10 other ingredient companies. Smart Skin is on the food manufacturing technology slate, alongside Charlottetown's Tracktile and Sydney, Nova Scotia's Mabel Systems.

The list, and what the totals do not say

Foodtech Frontier is in its second year. The 40 companies are listed in five categories: ingredients, manufacturing, waste and cleantech, restaurant technology, and digital supply chain. CFIN says that, taken together, they have $80 million in sales, invested $28 million in R&D in the past year, and have raised $203 million to date. Exports are 65 percent of those sales. Each plans to raise another $6.4 million on average, and the group projects sales up 81 percent over the coming year. Those figures are for the whole cohort. CFIN does not break out Chinova or Smart Skin.

Other Atlantic names on the list: Infusd Nutrition in Halifax, with Chinova in ingredients; RFINE Biomass Solutions in Halifax and Freshr Technologies in Dartmouth under waste and cleantech; Dispension Industries in Dartmouth under restaurant tech. Celebration events are set for November in Toronto, Halifax, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary. Sponsors are the Government of Canada, BDC, MLT Aikins and RBCx.

"The 40 companies on this list are developing technologies that can help food businesses become more productive, competitive and resilient," CFIN chief executive Dana McCauley said. Winners get national recognition and introductions to CFIN's network of investors, partners and customers. Neither Fredericton company announced a new round or customer alongside the list.
