Somewhere in a bottling plant right now, a can that isn't a can is riding the line at full production speed. It's a Quantifeel sensor drone — a replica container lined with pressure-sensitive skin — and it belongs to Smart Skin Technologies of Fredericton.

The problem

High-speed beverage and packaging lines push thousands of containers a minute through fillers, cappers, labellers, and case packers. When guide rails pinch or conveyors surge, containers scuff, dent, break, or jam — and diagnosing where the line is abusing them has traditionally been an exercise in guesswork and downtime.

The product

Smart Skin's answer is measurement from the container's point of view. Its sensor drones — with up to a thousand pressure sensors wrapped in the exact form factor of the customer's can or bottle — travel the line recording surface pressure and motion in real time, giving production teams a precise map of every problem point. The Quantifeel software then ties those forces to operational parameters, so fixing the line is engineering rather than folklore.

The customer logic is brutal and simple: at bottling scale, a fraction of a percent less breakage and unplanned downtime pays for the system.

The lineage

A UNB spinoff that went global, Smart Skin has raised multiple rounds backed by the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation and Halifax-based Build Ventures, and its gear now runs in plants for some of the world's largest beverage and packaging companies — one more entry in Fredericton's quietly excellent industrial-sensing tradition, alongside Eigen Innovations and Measurand.

Nobody brags about pressure mapping at parties. The plants know.
