Measurand: The Fredericton Sensors Watching the World's Dams Move

Three decades after its founding, the geotechnical instrument maker's ShapeArray sensors monitor deformation in dams, tunnels, and rail lines worldwide — now as part of Terra Insights.

When a dam settles, a tunnel bores past a foundation, or a rail embankment starts to creep, somebody needs to know in millimetres, continuously, for years. A good portion of the world's infrastructure answers that question with hardware designed in Fredericton.

Measurand has been working on 3D shape sensing since 1993. Its signature product, ShapeArray — first launched in 2006 — is a flexible, automated deformation sensor: rigid stainless-steel segments connected by flexible joints, each segment carrying MEMS tilt sensors, a microprocessor, and a temperature sensor. Drop it into a borehole or fasten it along a structure and it reports the ground's movement in real time, replacing generations of manual inclinometer surveys.

Where it goes

ShapeArray variants monitor dams, tunnels, retaining walls, buildings, soil settlement, rail lines, and pipelines — the unglamorous, high-consequence corners of civil engineering where failure is measured in lives and nine-figure remediations. Mining is a major market; a partnership with RST Instruments extended the platform's reach into large-scale mine deformation monitoring.

The quiet consolidation

Measurand, now employing more than 70 people, is part of Terra Insights, a platform that unites five geotechnical and monitoring brands — Measurand, RST Instruments, 3vGeomatics, Syscom Instruments, and NavStar — into a single sensor-to-insight offering.

It's a familiar New Brunswick shape: a specialized instrument company, world-class in a niche most people never think about, compounding for thirty years a few blocks from the university. The province's tech identity gets told through software. Its hardware keeps holding up the ground.
