InteractiveNB and Spandrel Take New Brunswick Studios to Gamescom

Three InteractiveNB members are on the CIAIC mission in Cologne this week, and Fredericton's Spandrel Interactive is there looking for XR, AI, and real-time 3D partners.

Gamescom opened in Cologne today. The German games association game and Koelnmesse run the floor through 30 August, after gamescom dev on 24 August and Opening Night Live on 25 August. This year’s theme is “Games Spark Excitement for the Future.”

InteractiveNB posted that three of its members are there on the Canadian Interactive Alliance (CIAIC) mission: Reframe Games, Influx Games, and tasteslikemetal. The association said trips like this “reflect the partnerships we’ve built and the work we’re doing to open doors for New Brunswick studios,” and asked people on the floor to connect with those teams.

Separately, Fredericton studio Spandrel Interactive wrote that it is in Cologne looking for applied R&D and co-development in spatial computing, AI, XR, and real-time 3D. Reach-outs, it said, can go to founder Jeff Mundee or Chad Comeau.

Those two posts sit on top of each other for a reason. Mundee founded Spandrel and is InteractiveNB’s vice-president. Comeau leads creative at Reframe, which Spandrel calls its game studio — and Reframe is one of the three InteractiveNB members on the CIAIC list.

A two-year-old association with a national seat

InteractiveNB is the public name of the Interactive Association of NB, a nonprofit that introduced itself on LinkedIn in 2024. Its site describes a mandate to advocate for New Brunswick’s interactive digital media sector, keep communication clear, and educate — with a vision of a global presence and talent that stays in the province.

Membership is public: student and instructor (non-voting), independent, small business for teams of up to ten, and enterprise for larger shops. Benefits listed on the site include a members-only Discord, event discounts, and a vote for paying members.

CIAIC lists Interactive NB among its provincial member associations, in the same set as Interactive Ontario, DigiBC, and New Media Manitoba. That is the national hook for this week’s trip: a Canadian IDM mission, not a one-studio junket.

The board is Jade Yhap (president), Jeff Mundee (vice-president), Chris Scribner (secretary), and Kevin Chick (treasurer). Yhap’s 2024 launch note introduced him as a marketer at industrial 3D firm ASETS-CA and as someone who had shown games at venues including Games for Change.

Spandrel: game-production habits on training, AI, and UX

Spandrel is an independent digital production studio and consultancy in Fredericton, founded in 2020. Its about page says Mundee started the firm after building games for EA and Activision in the 2000s, and that he teaches game design and 3D production in the University of New Brunswick’s Media Arts and Cultures program.

The public offer is not a consumer hit list. Spandrel sells VR and XR training (including Corbel LMS), custom AI on a client’s own data, UX for software that is not landing, industrial and B2B web work, game work-for-hire, and research partnerships in XR, motion capture, and interactive tech. Clients named in that copy include universities, government departments, and healthcare training programs.

Denise Paradis, executive director of the New Brunswick Continuing Care Safety Association, is quoted on the homepage saying a VR training project arrived on time and put NBCCSA “as a leader and innovator in safety Training.”

Chris Scribner, director of production, is listed with credits on A Little to the Left and Burden of Command. He is also InteractiveNB’s secretary. Chad Comeau leads creative at Reframe.

A spandrel, the studio notes, is the leftover space in an arch — structure or ornament, depending on the building. That is the brand metaphor: hold the idea up, then finish the details.

Reframe, Influx, and tasteslikemetal on the floor

Reframe Games calls itself a studio that makes “games for good.” The public catalogue includes Noxia Somnia, Quiet Islands, CUBIX Elements, and Guide. It also offers art, design, programming, and testing as a service. Because it is Spandrel’s game studio and an InteractiveNB member on the CIAIC trip, it is the overlap in this week’s news.

Influx Games presents as a New Brunswick indie shop — “the influx of young and talented.” Its current public title is Amberon End, a 2D rogue-lite in which the player defends, repairs, and upgrades a bunker. Founder Long Hin Tam has described the team as students and recent graduates who want to make games in New Brunswick.

tasteslikemetal is an independent games-and-animation studio whose primary project is Glassborne, an exploration-puzzle adventure that treats the player’s health as the resource that powers the world. The site lists a playable vertical slice as complete and names Gamescom preparation among current work. Founder Curtis Alderson lists Rexton as home base.

A games file that is more than one Main Street studio

NB Tech News has already covered Gogii Games’ twenty-year run in Moncton. This week’s Cologne trip is a different layer: a two-year-old provincial association, a 2020 Fredericton production house with an XR and AI book of work, and three member studios asking to be found on a German show floor.

InteractiveNB’s post put it as opening doors. Spandrel’s put it as finding R&D partners. Both are the same bet — that New Brunswick interactive work is export work, and that the way to prove it is to show up.
