Saint John's Versos AI Turns Studio Archives into Rights-Cleared AI Fuel
After a $1.85M seed and a CuriosityStream partnership, the Saint John startup is indexing video libraries — and digging old tape — for model trainers who need provenance, not scraped scraps.

Versos AI is building the unglamorous middle of the generative-AI stack from Saint John: take a studio's messy video library, structure it scene by scene, prove who owns it, and license the result to model trainers who would rather buy data than scrap it.
That pitch has stacked real commercial milestones since late 2025 — a co-led seed round, a Nasdaq-listed streaming partner with equity skin in the game, and a digitization alliance aimed at footage still sitting on physical tape.
What the platform does
Versos's Video Library Intelligence Platform indexes video at the frame level and turns full libraries into searchable, AI-ready datasets. Content owners keep files in their own cloud storage; Versos connects in place, enriches metadata, packages datasets against buyer specs, and tracks chain of custody through delivery.
Co-founder and CEO Chris Keevill told BetaKit the company closes a gap that studios and hyperscalers both feel: “Until now, there has been no purpose-built solution for converting unstructured video libraries into structured datasets suitable for hyperscale AI training.” A companion Video Training Data Marketplace is meant to match those structured libraries with AI buyers who need rights-cleared supply.
Per BetaKit's February reporting, Versos already works with 20+ studios and creators across Canada, the US, the UK, France, Germany, India, and China, and the Saint John team numbered about 11 people at launch.
Seed money, then a streaming co-investor
In late 2025 Versos closed a $1.85 million CAD equity seed co-led by Innovobot Resonance Ventures and the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation, with Island Capital Partners, RiSC Capital, and Waterloo's Velocity Fund also in — a round BetaKit covered when the marketplace thesis first went public. The company had previously raised about $1.5 million via SAFE.
The February platform launch was anchored by a multi-year commercial partnership with documentary streamer CuriosityStream (NASDAQ: CURI), which is using Versos for scene-level video intelligence and made an equity investment of undisclosed size. BetaKit put Versos's total capital raised at about $5 million after that cheque.
Digging the tape vaults
In April 2026, Versos partnered with Australia-based Tape Ark to digitize legacy tape archives, migrate them to the cloud, and run Versos structuring on the result — a direct line from shelves of aging media into licensable training sets. Tape Ark says it has processed more than an exabyte of data globally, including over 200 petabytes of video.
That is the Saint John angle in one sentence: not another chatbot, but infrastructure for the AI data economy, built where NBTel-alumni capital and NBIF cheques still matter. The next test is the same one every marketplace faces — enough library supply, enough hyperscaler demand, and a provenance story that survives a lawyer's review.
